The following two projects were selected as the winner of the ‘Global Prize’ of the ESD Okayama Award 2020.

Empowering Communities for Food Waste Recycling and Sustainable Urban Farmin

【Organization】

RCE Central Semenanjung】 (Malaysia)

【Summary】

Zero food waste Project led by the University of Malaya, which operates RCE. More than 300 tons of food waste is converted into compost, and “the composting method” that returns to nature also contributes to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions of more than 5,000 tons. It also provides training and agricultural programs on composting food waste for more than 10,000 individuals in local community.

The project have not only directly lead to cost saving in food waste disposal, but also contributes to urban agriculture, waste management, energy conservation, etc., and helps promote sustainable food production and healthy lifestyles among the community members.

The project aims to increase income through the sale of agricultural products while implementing an economically effective system by minimizing food waste, leading to improved livelihoods for urban farmers and low-income people.

Formentera Project: Conservation and integration of Maritime Cultural Heritage in the island community.

【Organization】

Instituto Balear de Estudious en Argueologia Maritima(IBEAM) /  Balearic Institute of Maritime Archaeology Studies(IBEAM) (Spain)

【Summary】

IBEAM was established in 2012 with the participation of various stakeholders to research, protect, preserve and disseminate the Marine Cultural Heritage (MCH) of the Balearic Islands, Spain.

While significantly reducing environmental risks and impacts by working with government agencies and local companies to promote advanced educational programs through education and research. Also it is to protect coastal and marine cultural heritage. It aims to improve social equality, strengthen social cohesion, promote mutual understanding, and improve economic benefits.

In addition, it is a unique initiative activities that fosters the identity of local residents and practices education.

*They were chosen by juries from 14 nominated projects selected in the first-round of selection (83 applications from 33 countries in total). 

*There will be The ESD Forum in a virtual Forum in the end of January, 2021 and the Award nominees’ will make a presentation about their project.
