ESD Forum/ESD Okayama Award 2016

ESD Forum/ESD Okayama Award 2016 was held as follows:

  • Date: 29 October 2016 (Saturday) 10: 00~16: 30
  • Venue: Okayama International Center
  • Organizers: Okayama ESD Promotion Commission, ESD Okayama Award Steering Committee, Okayama City

The six nominated projects were presented in the morning and the jury selected two prize winning projects for the ‘Okayama Regional Prize’. Additionally, the two prize winning projects for the ‘Global Prize’ were presented. Consequently, the presenters and participants of the forum exchanged their experiences and ideas.

Comments from the Jury

Representing the jury, Dr. Hirofumi Abe, Chairperson of Okayama ESD Promotion Commission, made a comment as follows;
95 projects applied for the 'Global Prize' (91 projects from 39 countries around the world and 4 from Japan) and 10 projects applied for the 'Okayama Regional Prize' during application period from 30 May 2016 to 29 July.
Through the preliminary screening and the web voting, 10 finalists for the ‘Global Prize’ and 6 finalists for the ‘Okayama Regional Prize’ were selected. After final selection, two projects won the ‘Global Prize’. Regarding to the ‘Okayama Regional Prize’, the 6 nominees made presentations at the ESD Forum/ESD Okayama Award and the jury selected two prize winning projects.

Global Prize

ESD Okayama Award aims to reward outstanding ESD projects at local community around the world, and the selection criteria consist of the following 6 aspects:
1) Vision, 2) Collaboration, 3) Integration, 4) Empowerment, 5) Future Strategy, 6) Innovation

The points below were especially recognized as important.

  1. The project will contribute to improve the visibility and promotion of ESD at local community
  2. The project contributes to creating a sustainable society through integrating three aspects of environment, economic and society.
  3. The project empowers individuals and communities.
  • ‘Water Kiosk at School by the International Transformation Foundation (ITF)[Kenya]
    ・Setting a water kiosk at school contributes to ensuring safe drinking water, which is the foundation for realizing a sustainable society.
    ・School Children operate the kiosk and that leads to improvement of their entrepreneurship and skills.
    ・The children came to be free from the labor of fetching water and that leads to raise the enrollments rate. The income of the kiosk improves the sanitation and economic situation of the school.
  • ‘Indonesian River Restoration Movement (IRRM) or “Gerakan Restorasi Sungai Indonesia” (GRSI)’ by the Gadjah Mada University as First
    ・Secretariat or Host of the Indonesian River Restoration Movement [Indonesia]
    ・The Gadjah Mada University has taken the initiative and been fostering the networking with other organizations and participation of the local communities. Collaboration among various stakeholders is realized.
    ・By utilizing expertise of the university, the project aims to create sustainable communities through restoration and conservation of the river environment based on the local tradition.
    ・Since the launch in 2014, the number of the river communities has increased from 6 to 22, and the outreach of the project is expanding.

Additional Comments

This year the number of the applications was high, and all of them have been seriously addressing local issues. Also, many of the projects are conducting good ESD practices which are contributing to creation of a sustainable society. It is expected that ESD practices will be continuously conducted and expanded in each communities around the world.

Two projects won the 'Global Prize' of the ESD Okayama Award 2016!

The following two projects were selected as the winner of the ‘Global Prize’ of the ESD Okayama Award 2016.

  • A water kiosk at school
    < International Transformation Foundation (ITF) >
  • Indonesian River Restoration Movement (IRRM) or “Gerakan Restorasi Sungai Indonesia” (GRSI)
    <Gadjah Mada University as First Secretariat or Host of the Indonesian River Restoration Movement >

They were chosen by a jury from a total of 95 applications submitted from 39 countries. The Okayama Award presentation ceremony will be held as follows:

10 projects were nominated for the 'Global Prize' of the ESD Okayama Award 2016!

Through the first-round of selection the following 10 projects were nominated for the ‘Global Prize of the ESD Okayama Award 2016.

The ‘ESD Okayama Award’ was established by the ‘ESD Okayama Award Steering Board’※ and Okayama City in 2015 to showcase and promote ESD, and to support the organizations carrying out ESD activities.
