ESD Forum/ESD Award 2017 was held!

ESD Forum/ESD Okayama Award 2017 was held as follows:
- Date: 21 October 2017 (Saturday) 10:00~15:30
- Venue: Okayama Convention Center Reception Hall
- Organizers: Okayama ESD Promotion Commission, ESD Okayama Award Steering Committee, Okayama City

The five nominated projects were presented in the morning and the jury selected two prize winning projects for the'Okayama Regional Prize'. In the afternoon, the two prize winning projects for the 'Global Prize' were presented. Consequently, the presenters and participants of the forum exchanged their experiences and ideas.

Comments from the Jury

Representing the jury, Dr. Hirofumi Abe, Chairperson of Okayama ESD Promotion Commission, made a comment as follows;
44 projects applied for the 'Global Prize' (43 projects from 28 countries around the world and 1 from Japan) and 14 projects applied for the 'Okayama Regional Prize' during application period from 24 April 2017 to 30 July.
Through the preliminary screening and the web voting, 11 finalists for the ‘Global Prize’ and 5 finalists for the 'Okayama Regional Prize' were selected. After the final selection, two projects won the 'Global Prize'. Regarding to the 'Okayama Regional Prize', the 5 nominees made presentations at the ESD Forum/ESD Okayama Award and the jury selected two prize winning projects.

<Global Prize>
ESD Okayama Award aims to reward outstanding ESD projects at local community around the world, and the selection criteria consist of the following 6 aspects:
1) Vision, 2) Collaboration, 3) Integration, 4) Empowerment, 5) Future Strategy, 6) Innovation

The points below were especially recognized as important.
- The project will contribute to improve the visibility and promotion of ESD at local community
- The project contributes to creating a sustainable society through integrating three aspects of environment, economic and society.
- The project empowers individuals and communities.

● Conservation of Integrated Traditional Arts in Social and Economic Empowerment of local communities
< Dewi Fortuna Community Learning Center >
・Its approach to a sustainable community development from cultural aspect by utilizing community learning centres (CLCs) is unique, and can be a model for other local communities.
・The project promotes community empowerment with a focus on conservation of traditional cultures, and presents a clear vision which integrates social, cultural, educational and economic aspects.
・The project is conducted in the area damaged by the 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake and the 2010 eruption of Mount Merapi. It can be a reference case of disaster reconstruction through ESD.

● Kerala Balakrishi Shastra Congress (KBKSC) (Kerala Children’s Agricultural Science Congress)
< Regional Centre of Expertise, Trivandrum >
・The project aims at reviving organic farming through school education in a RCE (Regional Centre of Expertise). It contributes to increase interest of young people in a local agriculture, which leads to reducing the shortage of farmers.
・The project presents a clear vision. Environmental, economic and social aspects are integrated through raising awareness of young people in agriculture.
・Learning at schools is utilized for a sustainable community development and it will be a good model for other countries and local communities.

< Additional Comments >
・In addition to these two projects, there were many excellent projects which lead to the sustainable human and community development. I realized that ESD is expanding to all over the world and various thematic fields. Toward a sustainable future, I hope that ESD will be continuously implemented in many areas in the world.

Two projects won the 'Global Prize' of the ESD Okayama Award 2017!

The following two projects were selected as the winner of the ‘Global Prize’ of the ESD Okayama Award 2017.

They were chosen by a jury from 11 nominated projects selected in the first-round of selection (44 applications from 29 countries in total). The ESD Okayama Award presentation ceremony will be held as follows:

The ‘ESD Okayama Award 2017’ is open for entry!

The award conducted by Okayama City and ESD Okayama Award Steering Committee will reward outstanding ESD practices in local communities around the world to support the organizations carrying out ESD activities, and also showcase and promote ESD.
