Okayama City Flood Hazard Map

Before Reading the Okayama City Flood Hazard Map

A map of the areas expected to be submerged or submerged was created based on MLIT's and Okayama Prefecture's data on the expected flooding situation in case of a river overflow due to heavy rain in river basins, such as the Asahi River. The expected water depth of each submerged area in case of flooding is color-coded.

Expected flood-triggering heavy rain (set rainfall amount) in river basins

  • Asahi River water system: Asahi River, Hyakkengawa River
The heaviest rainfall in 150 years (Total rainfall of 257 mm in 48 hours in the Asahi River basin)
  • Asahi River water system: Suna River (Joto)
The heaviest rainfall in 100 years (Total rainfall of 268 mm in 48 hours in the Suna River basin)
  • Yoshii River water system: Yoshii River
The heaviest rainfall in 150 years (Total rainfall of 285 mm in 48 hours in the Yoshii River basin)
  • Sasagase River water system: Sasagase River, Ashimori River, Suna River (Ichinomiya)
The heaviest rainfall in 100 years (Total rainfall of 188.5 mm in 24 hours in the Sasagase River basin)
  • Kurashiki River water system: Kurashiki River
The heaviest rainfall in 30 years (Total rainfall of 181 mm in 24 hours in the Kurashiki River basin)
  • Yoshii River water system: Senmachi River
The heaviest rainfall in 30 years (Total rainfall of 127.6 mm in 24 hours in the Senmachi River basin)

Precautions

Note 1
Areas outside the areas expected to be submerged may be submerged depending on the type of rainfall, topography of the surrounding areas, or due to flooding of small streams.

Note 2
Actual submersion may be deeper than the expected submersion depth. Particularly, you should be more cautious in underground spaces that may be dangerous due to running water draining from ground level.

Note 3
The areas expected to be submerged on this map may not match with areas expected to be submerged in flooding of other small streams and canals.

Evacuation behaviors and shelters

Evacuation advisory
When evacuation advisories or instructions are announced, please evacuate as soon as possible.

When there is a possibility of river overflow, you should immediately follow the evacuation advisories and instructions issued by Okayama City. It is also important to think about autonomous evacuation actions if you feel danger or anxiety due to changes in the weather forecast or warnings, or notice worsening weather conditions even before the evacuation advisories and instructions are announced.

When there is heavy rainfall, you should be very careful in using underground shopping arcades and passages to get somewhere else or as an evacuation route because they have the possibility to be submerged. Besides, take precautions against landslides in some areas.

shelter
Check the whereabouts of shelters during ordinary times.

Shelters are not safe in all disasters, and may become submerged in floods. Please take the utmost precaution in using a shelter in the areas expected to be submerged. (It may be necessary to go to the upper floors).

If you do not have enough time to go outside the areas expected to be submerged or get to a shelter, please consider emergency evacuation to a robust building with substantial height (higher than the expected submerged depth) or to a hill.

Elderly people, children and others in need of nursing care in times of disaster should keep earlier preparedness with evacuation in mind.
